BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Jennifer Wortz won the Republican Primary for the 35th District State House seat on Tuesday as she easily outdistanced two rivals.
Wortz defeated Hillsdale Mayor Adam Stockford and Branch County Commissioner Tom Matthew and will now face Democrat Don Hicks in the November General Election.
With just about all of the precincts reporting, Wortz had 7,302 votes or about 52 percent of the ballots cast. Stockford was second with 4,205 votes or 30 percent while Matthew had 2,547 votes or 18 percent.
Wortz carried Branch and Hillsdale Counties by large margins.
Wortz defeated Matthew by about 1,800 votes in Branch County and she beat Stockford by over 1,100 votes in Hillsdale County.
The seat became open when current State Representative Andrew Fink decided last September to run for the Michigan Supreme Court.
