COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After the City of Coldwater was recently awarded a $42,000 state grant, the Coldwater City Council on Monday night gave permission to the Fire Department to purchase new turnout gear.
The grant came after the State of Michigan this past spring allocated funds for the gear that would be bought and used by fire departments that employ fulltime firefighters.
All turnout gear has to be taken out of service 10 years after the date of manufacture. It’s also beneficial for firefighters to have two sets of turnout gear available.
Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz says a quote of just over $44,000 was obtained for the purchase of 12 sets of coats and pants from Phoenix Safety Outfitters, who the City has purchased turnout gear from in the past.
The state grant would cover $42,000 of the cost. The remaining funds are already allocated in the current fiscal year budget.
