STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals have the Silver Football in their possession for at least the next year after they defeated the Sturgis Trojans 35-8 in the opening game of the varsity high school football season on Thursday night.
Coldwater dominated the first half as they built a 32-0 halftime lead.
The Cardinals opened the scoring on a 62 yard swing pass for a touchdown from Dracyn Foster to Dayton Ennis with 4:52 left in the first quarter.
Coldwater busted the game open with four second quarter touchdowns.
Foster hooked up with a Bennett McDonald on a 35-yard scoring strike to make it 12-0 with 10:59 to go until halftime.
The Cardinals built their lead to 19-0 with 7:02 left on a 13 yard touchdown by McDonald’s Player of the Game Kaden Roby.
Foster’s third touchdown pass of the night to Evans Lewis from 34 yards with 4:41 remaining in the half gave Coldwater a 26-0 lead.
Lewis closed out the second quarter scoring for the Cardinals with 1:48 left until halftime on a eight yard touchdown scamper.
Manuel Hernandez scored the only second half points for Coldwater as he double doinked a 25 yard field goal off the left upright and the crossbar with 2:34 left in the third quarter to give the Cardinals a 35-0 lead and send the game into the running clock criteria.
Sturgis finally got on the board with three seconds left as Beckett Lamb threw a two yard touchdown to Dawson Miller. The Trojans got the two point conversion as they avoided being shut out by the Cardinals for the first time since 1988.
Unofficially, Coldwater had a 397 to 75 edge in total yards which included 207 yards on the ground.
Foster passed for 190 yards and three scores while Roby had 93 yards on ten carries. Naseem Taha had 47 yards on six carries.
