BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – What had been a frustrating two days for drivers west of Coldwater ended on Thursday afternoon as M-86 was reopened between U.S. 12 and Wheeler Road after a sinkhole was repaired.
The small sinkhole was discovered late Tuesday morning just east of Wheeler Road which led to the closing of a nearly two mile stretch of West Colon Road.
MDOT’s Greg Finnila says it was caused by an irrigation failure after some sort of metal pipe casing rusted out and leaked. He says it was installed under the road during the 1970’s.
It took almost two days for crews to make the necessary repairs. Drivers were allowed back on the road just after 3:30 p.m. and the “Road Closed” signs were removed.
