Margaret A. Mendelsohn, 86, of Coldwater, formerly of Tekonsha, passed away Monday, June 3, 2024, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater.
A memorial graveside service will take place on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Union City.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation 1276 Tate Trl., Union City, MI 49094.

Margaret was born on July 14, 1937, in Battle Creek, Michigan to Andrew Jonathan and Marjorie Virginia (Baluss) Craig. When Margaret was young, the family moved to Arizona, then to Vallejo, California until moving to Union City, Michigan in 1947.
Margaret graduated from Union City High School with the Class of 1956. While in school, Margaret played the oboe in Concert Band and the glockenspiel in Marching Band. She also sang in the school’s choir and was on the Homecoming Court.
September 2, 1956, Margaret married Jack Shepard in Union City. They had two sons, Jeffrey and Jack.
Margaret was employed by Coldwater General Hospital for five years, and Lakeview General Hospital for twenty years. The family moved to Battle Creek in 1964 after having lived in Key West, Florida, Corpus Christi, Texas and Union City. Their marriage ended in divorce.
Margaret married Dr. Allan Mendelsohn on November 19, 1977. They resided in Tekonsha, Michigan. She worked in his medical office from 1980 to 2000.
They enjoyed traveling, including trips to Scotland and Italy, fishing, dancing and spending winters in Pompano Beach, Florida after retirement until Allan’s death in 2010.
They were members of the Moose Lodge in Marshall. Margaret was a former member at Congregational Church in Union City, where she sang in the choir and taught VBS. Later in life, she attended Girard United Methodist Church.
Margaret enjoyed music, playing the organ, crocheting, fishing, bike riding, and picking up shells at the beach. She loved watching Michigan football, and spending time at her RV park in Athens with her family and her beloved dog Lyda.
Margaret is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Kathy) Shepard of Wilton Manors, FL and Jack (Jessica) Shepard of Albion; her grandchildren, Zachary and Hudson; her sisters Deborah (Ivan) Egnatuk of Marshall and Caroline Jeanie Hall of Kalamazoo; her brother Christopher (Wendy) Craig of Jacksonville, NC; her sister-in-law Julie Bauer of Battle Creek; her many nieces and nephews; and her special friend Cindy Wart.
In addition to her parents and her husband Allan, Margaret is preceded in death by her sister Betsy Munro and her brother Andrew Craig.
