UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – William Avery, Kenneth Brooks and Delores Wasikowski have been selected as the 2024 Citizens of the Year in the Village of Union City.
They will be honored during Farm to Fork on Saturday, September 28 at 5:45 p.m..
At 91 years of age, Avery is one of the oldest living Union City residents. He is Union City’s longest serving Village President. He served for 12 years from 2010 until 2022 and has been a part of the Village Council for 18 years. Avery has also served on the Branch County Board of Commissioners.
Brooks was born and raised in Union City. He had a 42-year career with Southern Michigan Bank and Trust, becoming the bank president and retiring in 2013. Brooks joined the Rotary in 1980. He was the Rotary President twice and has received the Paul Harris award through Rotary four times.
Wasikowski is a lifelong area resident and graduated from Union City High School in 1979. She has worked at Southern Michigan Bank and Trust since 2012 as a teller and in customer service. She joined Rotary shortly after working at the bank and has been a large part of that organization since then.
The Citizens of the Year were selected by a committee made up of members from groups around the village.
Serving on the committee were Judie Esch (Green Thumb Garden Club), Ralph Gottschalk (American Legion Post 196), Jim Hurley (Village of Union City), Chris Katz (Union City Schools), Dan Mauer (Church Association), and Barb Wallen (Union City Rotary).
