UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City’s girls volleyball team won their Union City Classic at McNett Fieldhouse on Saturday in dramatic fashion.
The Chargers had a rough time in pool play as they dropped two out of three matches. The defeated Delton Kellogg (25-21, 25-19) but lost to Colon (23-25, 25-15, 15-17) and Napoleon (14-25, 11-25).
In bracket play, the Chargers had to go three games to defeat Athens (25-16, 23-25, 15-11) in the quarterfinals and Napoleon (7-25, 27-25, 15-13) in the semifinals.
The Chargers claimed the tourney title as they defeated Colon 25-19, 25-20 in the finals.
Coach Ashley Herman said, “I am so proud of the way the girls played today. This is just what we needed as we move into a very tough few weeks of conference play!”
Gillian Gallup had 33 kills for the Chargers. Katherine Johnson had 73 digs, Ambrielle Phelps recorded 86 assists and Hailey Day had 11 aces and five blocks.
