COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Department has announced the retirement of one of its volunteer K-9s, Xenia.
While Xenia is always available to assist K-9 Chaos, her expertise is in trailing which is more suited for search responsibilities. Xenia started her role as a volunteer K-9 with the Sheriff’s Office in January of 2017.
With her many certifications, Xenia has been requested to assist numerous Sheriff’s and City Police, the FBI, Canada Police, and recently requested to assist in the search for victims of India’s latest earthquake.
Xenia has participated in over 200 searches where at least five of her finds saved a life.
Sheriff John Pollack said in a post on the department’s Facebook page that her most memorable case involved a 12-year-old victim of domestic abuse which was featured on the Nancy Grace Show.
With the information provided by Xenia through her search, the child was found and the FBI was able to pinpoint the parents as the abusers.
Xenia’s handler Jackie Harris along with Harris’ daughter started the Adopt a Cop program at Jefferson Elementary School in Coldwater.
Pollack says the Sheriff’s Office will miss Xenia and how much she has done to help not only the citizens of Branch County but those outside the county, state and country as well.
