LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Figures released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget showed Branch County’s unemployment rate dropped in August to four-point-five percent.
It ended three straight months in which the jobless rate went up.
Branch County’s July unemployment rate was five-point-one percent after it was at four-point-four percent in June and at three-point-eight percent in May.
Branch County had the 18th lowest unemployment rate among Michigan’s 83 counties.
The report said not seasonally adjusted jobless rates decreased in all 17 Michigan
labor market areas over the month.
Michigan Center for Data and Analytics Labor Market Information Director Wayne Rourke says, “Michigan regions displayed typical seasonal jobless rate reductions in August, and payroll jobs advanced throughout most areas. However,
unemployment rates were elevated compared to August 2023, similar to the national and statewide trend.”
Workforce levels decreased in all 17 Michigan regions over the month.
Unemployment rates dropped by almost a point in neighboring counties. St. Joseph and Hillsdale Counties had jobless rates of 5-point-3 percent while the unemployment rate in Calhoun County was 5-point-6 percent.
Michigan’s August unemployment rate went up slightly to 4-point-5 percent after being at 4-point-four percent in July.
August unemployment rates around Michigan ranged from 2-point-8 percent in Livingston County to 7-point-6 percent in Oscoda County.
