JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – Consumers Energy says they will be burying power lines in Hillsdale and three other Michigan communities over the next two months as part of its commitment to bury 10 miles of lines this year through its Reliability Roadmap.
According to a news release from the utility, crews are working in Allegan and Allendale and are about to start in Hillsdale and Saugatuck.
They will be burying overhead power lines and protecting them from Mother Nature.
Just about the entire City of Hillsdale lost power following a ice storm in February of 2023. Over 17,000 Consumer’s Energy customers in Hillsdale County lost their power which is about 91 percent of the amount of customers Consumers has in Hillsdale County.
In all, Consumers is spending $3-point-7 million through a pilot program this year to bury power lines.
Other tactics in the Reliability Roadmap include increased line clearing, new technology, more durable iron poles and even a robotic dog.
Consumers plans to bury 1,000 miles of power lines over the next five years.
