UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City athletic teams will be helping a high school teacher and coach who has been dealing with some major health concerns recently.
Sarah Connelly was taken a local hospital’s emergency room on September 29 for severe abdominal pain. Doctors discovered a mass in her colon, along with lesions on her liver. She underwent surgery to remove the mass two days later.
She along with family and friends are awaiting biopsy results and a long-term treatment plan.
Annually, sports teams across the country recognize October as cancer awareness month by holding various events to raise money for a cause of their choice. This year, multiple Union City sports teams will be coming together for a handful of “Sarah’s Squad” events. The first of these events will be held on October 22 for the final week of conference play between the Union City Chargers and the Stockbridge Panthers.
All proceeds raised during the events will go directly to Connelly to aid in the extensive cost that will come with treatment and travel in the coming months.
Anyone who purchases and wears their “Sarah’s Squad” apparel, will get free admission to the October 22 Freshman, JV, and Varsity volleyball matches. There will be a bake sale, 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and big-ticket raffle that evening.
On October 25 there will be a Spaghetti Dinner before the Varsity football game against Buchanan from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria. The meal will be donations only and all proceeds will go directly to the Connelly family.
Anyone who would like to donate to the silent auction event is asked to contact Ashley Herman at ashley.herman@unioncityschools.org or (517) 749-1571 to set up a time to deliver items. They are asking for all donations to be delivered by October 18.
