BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows worsening drought conditions as the dry weather continued this week.
While most of Branch, Hillsdale and St. Joseph Counties are still considered to be abnormally dry, moderate drought conditions are being reported in the far southern portions of those counties near the Indiana and Ohio state lines.
Moderate, severe and extreme drought conditions are being reported in northwest Ohio while all of northeast Indiana has moderate drought conditions.
Warm and breezy conditions along with the ongoing dry conditions are leading to a heightened risk of field or brush fires on Friday afternoon. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
There is a chance of rain this weekend with cooler temperatures next week.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resource says nearly 85 percent of the entire state is in a moderate drought.
Over 170 acres burned in 26 wildfires around Michigan last week.
