BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School boys varsity soccer team captured their second ever District title Wednesday night, beating Parma Western 3-1 in the championship contest.
Dawood Gabry had all three goals for the Cardinals, who improve to 15-6-1 on the season and will face Allendale next Wednesday in the Regional semifinals at St. Joseph High School.
Gabry’s first goal came with 17:42 to play in the first half off a corner kick from Austin Accardi.
Western had a chance to tie the game eight minutes into the second half on a penalty kick, but had it blocked by Coldwater goalkeeper Franky Ramos, who made four saves on the night.
The Cardinals stretched their lead to 2-0 with 28:14 left in the game on another Gabry goal, this time assisted by Ahmed Norman. Western got within one goal less than a minute later on a corner kick to make the score 2-1.
Four minutes later they had another penalty kick opportunity, but put the shot over the goal.
The Cardinals sealed the victory with 1:54 to play on Gabry’s third goal of the game off the rebound of a shot by Rashed Ahmed.
Coldwater outshot Parma Western 26-6. The Panthers end their season at 6-13-1.
The Cardinals’ last District title was eight years, when they made it all the way to the state semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Holland High.
In other MHSAA Boys Soccer district action on Wednesday night, Bronson saw their season come to an end as the Vikings lost 8-0 to host school Hillsdale Academy in the Division Four district semifinals.
Hillsdale Academy will face Calhoun Christian for the district title on Friday night. Calhoun Christian defeated Jonesville 2-1 in the other Wednesday night semifinal.
In Division Three, Eaton Rapids will face Three Rivers in the Quincy district finals Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m..
