HASTINGS, MI (WTVB) – Defense took a holiday Friday at Baum Stadium at Johnson Field in Hastings, as the Saxons defeated the visiting Coldwater Cardinals 73-45. Both teams combined for 1,188 total offensive yards – 656 for Hastings and 532 for Coldwater. The Saxons led 18-10 at the end of the first quarter, 35-24 at halftime, and 66-45 after three.
The Cardinals had a record-setting night from quarterback Dracyn Foster and the receiving corps. Foster was 23-of-41 passing for 514 yards and 6 touchdowns, while getting sacked five times and intercepted once. Evan Lewis had 8 catches for 174 yards and 3 touchdowns, Bennett McDonald had 4 receptions for 174 yards and 2 scores, and Dayton Ennis had 7 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. Kendall Austin added 4 receptions for 61 yards.
Hastings outgained Coldwater on the ground 500-18. Cardale Winebrenner had 14 carries for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns, Isaiah Wilson ran for 194 yards and 4 scores on 13 carries, and Tyler Frazer had 10 carries for 48 yards and a TD. Quarterback Mason Tossava was 4-of-6 passing for 156 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no picks; Jett Barnum had both TD receptions and finished with 89 yards on 2 catches.
Defensively, Bennett McDonald led the Cardinals with 7 tackles, while Drew Ennis and Kendall Austin had 6 apiece. For the Saxons, Jett Barnum and Jayse Peterson each had 7.
The 118 combined points will put the game in the MHSAA record book for scoring by two teams with a minimum of 100 combined points and the losing team scoring at least 40.
With the loss, Coldwater fell to 3-5 overall, 1-4 in the Interstate 8. They will host Marshall next week on Senior Night.
Hastings improved to 7-1 overall and wrapped up Interstate 8 competition at 5-1. They will close the regular season next week at Wayland.
