COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Gunfire heard and reported by a pair of Coldwater High School students as they entered the building on Tuesday morning turned out to be target practice at the nearby Lakeland Correctional Facility.
The students report of the gunfire to school administration prompted a Shelter-in-Place which means that all students remain inside secure classrooms until further notice.
The Coldwater Police Department, including School Resource Officers from Coldwater High School and Legg Middle School responded immediately and were able to confirm that the shots were target practice from the prison.
School officials have also been informed there will be additional target practice between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
