RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, IN (WTVB) – A pickup truck pulling a trailer which contained 43 head of cattle crashed into a train operated by Indiana Northeastern Railroad Company on Tuesday afternoon east of Hamilton, Indiana.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says the crash happened just after 2:30 p.m. in the area of County Road 700 East near the Steuben-DeKalb County line.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Michael Meeks said in a press release that an initial crash scene investigation indicated 43-year-old Joshua Potts of Reading failed to yield to an eastbound freight train and entered the railroad crossing just as the train was crossing the roadway.
The train collided with the truck and trailer causing the trailer to detach.
Potts suffered abrasions and was transported to Cameron Hospital by Steuben County EMS for treatment. No one on the train was injured.
Several cars on the train were damaged. Potts indicated to the Sheriff’s Department that he did not realize the train was coming in time to get the truck and trailer stopped before entering the crossing.
Three head of cattle were lost in the crash. Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were Hamilton Police, the Hamilton Fire Department, Steuben County EMS, and representatives from Indiana Northeastern Railroad.
