UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers used a 38-28 rebounding edge to defeat the Bronson Vikings 64-53 in the Big 8 Conference boys basketball opener for both teams at McNett Fieldhouse.
Bronson jumped out to a 17-14 lead after the first quarter but the Chargers took the lead for good with a nine point run that started late in the first period.
Union City led 31-26 at halftime. The Chargers got the lead up to 16 points before settling a 51-38 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
The Vikings fought back to within seven points in the final period but could get no closer.
Union City’s Eli Payne scored a game-high 20 points thanks to five buckets from beyond the arc.
Two Chargers had double-doubles. Aidan Decker scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds while Rick Austin scored 15 points and snatched 12 boards.
Nolan Chard added 11 points for the Chargers.
After being held to three points in the first half, Bronson’s Kam Brackett finished as the Vikings’ leading scorer with 16 points. Owen Losinski and Warner Wotta both scored eight points and Zeb Olson grabbed seven rebounds.
Union City improved to 3-0 while Bronson dropped to 1-2. Union City also won the JV game 72-33.
Elsewhere, Quincy was outscored 36-16 in the second half as they dropped their Big 8 opener at Stockbridge 57-39. The Orioles fell to 1-2 overall.
Tekonsha was swept by Waldron, dropping the boys game 66-11 and the girls contest 31-28.
