James R. Thayer, 80, of Coldwater passed away peacefully Monday, December 9, 2024 at his home with his family by his side.
The funeral service will be held Friday, December 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Troy Smith from Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Elyria, OH officiating. Cremation will follow services.
Visitation will be held Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
Jim was born January 22, 1944 in Hillsdale, MI to Russell & Eunice Rhea (Bronson) Thayer. He graduated from Hillsdale High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Findlay College in Ohio. Jim married Sarah L. Pryce November 25, 1966 in Elyria, OH.
Mr. Thayer worked as a high school math teacher for 5 years in Ohio before beginning his career in convenience store management. He spent many years with the 7-Eleven Company and the Quick Stop in Jonesville before retiring. Jim then worked part time at Home Depot and Meijer in Coldwater for many years.
Jim was a member of the Coldwater Optimist and the Merry Mixers Square Dance Clubs. Jim had a love of bald eagles, especially viewing them in the wild.
He enjoyed working with children, especially his own. He loved attending their events and helping all kids in any way he could. He spent many years coaching Little League and Rocket Football. His family was his greatest joy.
Jim is survived by his wife Sarah; his children Tad (Sabrina) Thayer of Pittsburgh, PA, Joy (Tom) Tiernon of Ft. Wayne, IN, Jill (Todd) Ware of Coldwater, Dawn (Marty) Rowe of Coldwater; his brothers Tom Thayer of Lambertville, MI, Rusty (Lori) Thayer of Troy, MI; his brother-in-law Sam (Reggie) Pryce of Elmore, OH; his grandchildren Andy (Tawni) Carpenter, Karly (Cory) Carpenter, Durdana Carpenter, Ava Thayer, Mikayla Caudill, Kyle Caudill; his great grandchildren Alivia, Claire, Dean, Elaina, Jeremiah and Damian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Shirley Edwards and sister-in-law Frances Thayer.
Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Branch County or Animal Aid of Branch County.
