COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Efforts continue to save the steeple atop of the First Presbyterian Church of Coldwater.
Branch County Economic Development Coordinator Erin Veysey told the Coldwater Historic District Commission on Wednesday night a comprehensive conditional assessment and rehabilitation masterplan for the iconic steeple will serve as a cornerstone for the church’s leadership in planning for a restored exterior that honors the buildings historic significance.
She said a revised grant application has been submitted to the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office for preliminary review.
The original grant application was not funded by the State Historic Preservation Office and there are fears the steeple will be removed for safety purposes.
The application deadline is February 3, 2025.
Meanwhile, Veysey reported a Request For Proposals has been written as bids are being requested for a Structural Engineer who will determine if stabilization measures are needed for the Beech House.
She reported a comprehensive structural engineering analysis is necessary to prevent further deterioration of the 19th century building and to provide necessary preventative maintenance.
