ALGANSEE TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Department has released details of a officer-involved shooting involving one of their deputies that took place Monday night during a police pursuit.
Sheriff Fred Blankenship says the shooting occurred following a pursuit in Algansee Township.
Blankenship said at about 5:00 p.m., the suspect driver failed to stop for the Deputy, initiating a chase.
The pursuit began on Central Road near Ferguson Road and temporarily halted at the intersection of Kelley Road and State Line Road when the suspect vehicle left the road.
According to a Sheriff’s Department news release, the Deputy tried to take the suspect driver into custody at this location, and it was during this time that the officer-involved shooting took place.
A passenger in the suspect vehicle was unharmed. The suspect was identified as a 33-year-old man from Camden. He fled the scene but was later apprehended near the intersection of County Roads 200 North and 1000 East in Steuben County near the Ohio state line.
The suspect was transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center for medical treatment.
Blankenship says the investigation has been turned over to the Michigan State Police and is ongoing, with charges pending in both Michigan and Indiana.
As standard police policy following an incident like this, the unnamed deputy has been place on administrative leave pending a department investigation.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Indiana State Police, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the Fremont and Angola Police Departments and Steuben County EMS.
