UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – It’s getting close to being the sweet time of the year for the Union City Rotary Club.
They have begun gearing up for 2025 sap season by putting sap bags on hangers and club members are waiting to tap the maple trees.
According to a post on the club’s Facebook page, their tentative dates for tapping maple trees is February 21 and 22.
The tapping may happen earlier if the weather gets warmer before those dates.
The Union City Rotary Club is taking pre-orders of maple syrup if you want the first draw off.
The sap collected from the maple trees will be used for the Rotary Club’s annual selling of pure maple syrup. It’s a Union City tradition that goes back to the early 1950’s.
Once the sap is collected, it is then boiled down from a clear liquid to the maple syrup.
Besides members of the Rotary Club, just about everybody in the Union City community gets involved in the project. The money from the sale of the syrup goes back into Union City projects.
