CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Thanks to a donation from Ford Community Relations, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office has acquired an all-terrain vehicle that they say will significantly enhance the department’s ability to respond to emergencies in the county’s most remote and rugged areas.
Director of Ford Community Relations Gabby Bruno says. “We recognize the importance of public safety, and this donation is one of many in the Calhoun County area since the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan project was announced in 2022.”
Officials feel the ATV will be a game-changer in emergency response efforts. In 2024 alone, the Sheriff’s Alert Dive Team successfully rescued 23 individuals from the Kalamazoo River.
Calhoun County Sheriff Steven Hinkley says, “The challenges posed by increasingly rugged terrain, new obstacles like fallen trees, and the general conditions of rivers and lakes, especially after extreme weather events like the 2024 tornado, have made some rescue areas difficult to reach with larger vehicles. Increased recreational activity in the area further complicates access points.”
The ATV will carry essential rescue equipment into challenging terrain, including dive gear and small canoes.
