DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Mackenna Webster of Bronson will be the only Branch County wrestler going for a state championship at Ford Field on Saturday.
She won three matches on Friday in the girls 140 pound weight division. Webster scored a pair of pins before defeating Megan Melnyk of Warren Mott 10-7 in the semifinals in sudden victory overtime.
Webster will face Nanda Kibi of Plymouth Canton in Saturday’s championship match.
Her teammate Kailynne Scare went 1-2 in the girls 190 pound division.
The Division Four boys finals included eight wrestlers from Union City and six from Bronson but none of them were able to make Saturday afternoon’s championship round.
Union City’s Logan Mears at 138, Aidan Taylor at 144 and Alex Boyer at 150 all made the semifinals before they lost. They will be in the consolation bracket on Saturday and will make the podium as they can finish no worse than sixth.
Mears lost to Julien Kimling of Hudson on a 6-4 decision in the semifinals while Taylor was pinned by Beckett Campbell of Hudson in 4:41 and Boyer lost to Blake Sloan of Manchester 6-1.
Eliminated on Friday were Blayne Crance at 106, Kaden Russell at 120, Mitchell Graham at 126, Mason Hawthorne at 132 and Montana Connell at 157.
Bronson’s Layne Knisely got to the 165 pound semifinals before he lost to Drew Challender of St. Louis on a 5-2 decision and went into the consolation bracket. Knisely is assured of a trip to the podium as he can finish no worse than sixth.
Gabe Erwin at 157 pounds and Connor Harvey at 215 pounds are still alive in the consolation bracket. They both need a win in their opening matches on Saturday morning to assure themselves a trip to the podium.
Vikings who were eliminated on Friday were Collin York at 150, Mason Lindsey at 190 and Sam Tappenden at 285.
Quincy’s Landon Beardon dropped two matches and was eliminated on Friday in the Division Three finals at 165 pounds.
