UNDATED (WTVB) – Saturday was a busy day on baseball diamonds throughout the area, as Coldwater, Quincy, and Union City each saw action.
Coldwater at Pat Lowe Memorial Invitational
COLDWATER, MI – Coldwater went 1-2 at its own Pat Lowe Memorial Invitational, losing to Mason 6-3 and to Three Rivers 14-5. The Cardinals earned their first victory of the season as they held off Niles Brandywine 6-5.
Brayden Lackey had two hits against Mason, Owen Tappenden had a double, and Royale Fleming hit a two-RBI single.
Coldwater scored all their runs against Three Rivers in the final two innings. Tappenden singled and doubled, Fleming doubled, and Logan Turner drove in two runs.
In the win over Brandywine, the Cardinals scored five runs in the first inning, added an insurance run in the fourth, and had to hold off a furious Bobcat rally in the late innings. Fleming singled and doubled, while Rylan Edwards and Finn Hanson added two hits apiece. Edwards earned the win in relief of starting pitcher Tappenden.
Coldwater will take a 1-5 record into their Interstate 8 opener Tuesday at Marshall.
Hudson 7, Quincy 1; Quincy 11, Hudson 10
QUINCY, MI – Quincy split a doubleheader against visiting Hudson. The Tigers took the opener 7-1, while the Orioles won the nightcap 11-10.
Quincy could only muster three hits against Hudson pitchers in the first game: singles from Mason Graves, Jimmy Maynard, and starting pitcher Ryan Kempter.
In the second game, Graves and Alex Barry each singled and doubled and drove in three runs, while Kempter also collected two hits. Maynard was the winning pitcher, and Cobee Stevens earned the save.
Quincy is now 4-4 on the season. They return to action Tuesday at Springport.
Galesburg-Augusta 14, Union City 13; Union City 16, Galesburg-Augusta 3 (5 Innings)
GALESBURG, MI – Union City lost for the first time this season as they split a twinbill at Galesburg-Augusta. The Rams won the high-scoring opener 14-13, while the Chargers came back to take the nightcap 16-3 in five inning.
In the first game, Aidan Decker and Eli Payne each doubled, and Tucker Zweng had two hits. Payne took the loss on the mound.
Union City came back in the second game to crank out 14 hits, as they scored seven runs in the second inning and added six runs in the third. Zweng had two singles and a triple, Decker had two singles and a double and drove in three runs, Payne and Simon Swartzle each singled and doubled and had two RBIs, and Rick Austin added a two-run double. Carson Liles was the winning pitcher.
The Chargers improved to 4-1 on the season and will visit Concord on Tuesday.
