UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson Vikings swept a Big 8 Conference doubleheader from the Union City Chargers at Alumni Field on Tuesday night as they won both ends of the twin bill by scores of 11-9.
The Vikings built an 11-3 lead in the opener before the Chargers rallied for six runs in the last of the seventh and had the tying and winning runs on base but Bronson’s Max Byler earned the save by getting a strike out to end the game.
Carson Stevens struck out six as he went the first five innings to get the win for Bronson. Owen Kimmons homered into the St. Joseph River and drove in three runs while Warner Wotta and Stevens both had two run singles.
Aiden Decker belted a two run homer for the Chargers.
Bronson built a 6-0 lead after two innings in the darkness shortened nightcap and once again had to hold off a Union City rally.
With no lights at Alumni Field, the game was stopped because of darkness in the middle of the fifth at about 8:15 p.m.. At that point, it was considered an official game.
Byler was the winning pitcher in the nightcap with Kimmons earning the save. Byler helped his own cause with three RBI’s while Wotta and Kam Brackett both drove in two runs.
Decker smacked a grand slam home run into the St. Joe for the Chargers in the second game for the second splash ball of the doubleheader.
Union City’s Carson Liles had three hits and Simon Swartzle had a two run single.
