Margaret “Margie” (Poplawski) Helwig, 77, of Fulton, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 22, 2025, surrounded by family and friends after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady Fatima Catholic Church, 8220 M-60, Union City, MI 49094. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025 from 5:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M., followed by a Rosary Service, beginning at 7:00 P.M., at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation, 1276 Tate Trail, Union City, MI 49094.
Margie was born and raised in Athens, Michigan, on December 18, 1947, to John and Margaret Poplawski, and graduated from Athens High School in 1965. She was a proud Michigan State University cheerleader from 1965 to 1969. She dedicated 30 years of service to Lear/IAC in Mendon before retiring in 2010.
Margie had a deep love for nature and enjoyed gardening, living on the farm, and spending time outdoors with her family. She was a devoted member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir, and she also found purpose in serving with the Lions Club. Photography was one of her greatest passions, capturing life’s precious moments through her lens.
Margie is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Jacque Helwig of Fulton; her sisters, MaryJo Stephens of Jackson, MI, Terry (Dale) Keyes of Three Rivers, MI, and Johnita “Cookie” (Dave) Keeton of Battle Creek, MI; her children, Cathy Riley of Streamwood, IL, Mary (Nathan) Riley Johnson of Plantation, FL, Donnie Gabe Riley of Los Angeles, CA, and Kirk Riley of Queens, NY; and her stepchildren, Heidi (Ed) Wieland of Naperville, IL, Vonn Helwig of Aurora, IL, and Carmin (Ryan) Haylock of Livonia, MI. She was also a proud grandmother to Tim (Stephanie) Friel, Sam Johnson, Stephanie Johnson, Leah Haylock, and Kira Haylock, and she leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother-in-law, Dick Stephens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the new building fund at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, P.O. Box 161, Union City, MI 49094 or to Gentiva Hospice, 1911 W. Centre Ave #1, Portage, MI 49024.
Margie’s kindness, strength, love, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
