UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers swept a Big 8 Conference baseball doubleheader from the Quincy Orioles on Thursday night at Alumni Field by scores of 1-0 and 7-6.
The first game featured a pitchers dual between Union City’s Eli Payne and Quincy’s Brennan Allman.
The Orioles collected 10 hits off of Payne but he got the win by going the distance and stranding 12 base runners as Quincy was unable to come up with a clutch hit when they had runners in scoring position.
Payne finished with five strikeouts, one hit batter and one walk.
Christian Craven collected three hits for the Orioles while Ryan Kempter, Jimmy Maynard and Alex Barry all had two hits.
The scoreless tie was broken in the last of the seventh as Union City’s Simon Swartzle drew a bases loaded walk with nobody out that ended the game which lasted only an hour and 28 minutes.
Allman also went the distance with three strike outs. He was the hard luck losing pitcher despite allowing only three hits and facing only 19 batters through six innings. Two of the Charger hits came in the last of the seventh.
Union City had to hold off a Quincy rally to win the second game. The Chargers had a 7-3 lead going to the bottom of the seventh inning but Quincy refused to roll over.
The Orioles scored three runs to cut the Union City lead to one but winning pitcher Nolan Chard got the final out with the tying and winning runs on base.
Aidan Decker had two doubles in the nightcap to lead the Charger offense while Tucker Zweng had a two-run double.
Allman and Ryan Kempter both had two hits for Quincy while Alex Barry drove in two runs in the second game.
