COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council voted 5-2 on Monday night to allow tattoo parlors within the Central Business District with no restrictions on where they can be located.
The Coldwater Planning Commission directed Planning Director Robert Hawley last week to put together an amended ordinance that would allow tattoo parlors as a permitted use in the district.
Council members Jim Knaack and Travis Machan cast the no votes on Monday.
But Emily Rissman and John Petzko were among the Council members who supported the recommendation from the Planning Commission and the Downtown Development Authority.
Also voting yes were Council Members Randall Hazelbaker and Scott Houtz along with Mayor Tom Kramer.
Council members Chad Johnson and Michael Beckwith were absent.
Initially, tattoo parlors would not have been allowed on U.S. 12 or on Monroe Street. But Branch County Economic Growth Alliance Director Audrey Tappenden said in a letter to the Planning Commission for last Monday’s meeting that the D.D.A. was against the exclusion of tattoo parlors from specific locations in the district.
The tattoo parlor discussions started after Jason Salinaz told the Planning Commission in February he wanted to run a tattoo business at 87 West Pearl Street across from the U.S. Post Office.
