COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It was challenging, especially in the second game, but the Coldwater Cardinals won both ends of a makeup doubleheader Saturday against Jackson Northwest Saturday at the Rotary Softball Complex, 6-1 and 6-5.
In the opener, Laynie VanAken allowed only one run on four hits, one walk, and 13 strikeouts. She also went 3-for-4 hitting with two runs batted in. Mackenzie Searing went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and an RBI double, and Mya Porter was 3-for-4 including a triple as the Cardinals scored all their runs in the first two innings.
Coldwater was held scoreless in the second game until Mya Porter led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, her second of the season, to make the score 4-1. Rylie VanAken’s RBI double in the bottom of the fifth brought home Audi Bucklin and made the score 5-2. The Cardinals scored four runs in the seventh; Searing had the game-winning hit, a two-out single that scored Porter. Searing was also the winning pitcher, throwing two innings of one-hit ball in relief of starter Audi Bucklin. Rylie VanAken went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Audi Bucklin singled and doubled.
The Cardinals improved to 19-4 overall, 8-2 in the Interstate 8, and will visit Harper Creek on Tuesday.
BRONSON, MI – Bronson won its own Polish Classic tournament Saturday, beating Colon 14-1 in five innings and defeating Mendon 13-6.
Madison Shaw was the winning pitcher against Colon, allowing an unearned run on two hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts. Offensively, the Vikings put up 13 hits. Lydia Wells went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and four runs batted in, Kailynne Scare went 2-for-3 including a homer, and Ashlynn Harris was 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles.
Against Mendon, Wells was 2-for-4 with two doubles and drove in four runs, and Harris went 3-for-4 with two singles and a triple. Harris was also the winning pitcher, notching four strikeouts in seven innings.
Head Coach Becky Gray said, “The girls bounced back after a tough game against Clinton. We played with much more enthusiasm and focus (Saturday) and it showed in our play. It is always fun to get a win against a good team and be able to win your home tournament.”
Bronson improved to 18-9 on the season and will host Niles Brandywine on Monday.
EAST JACKSON, MI – Quincy traveled to East Jackson for the Al Glick Classic and went 1-1 on the day. They opened up with a 7-1 win against Onsted, but lost to Brooklyn Columbia Central 9-2 in the semifinals.
Danika Skirka was outstanding on the mound against Onsted, striking out 10. Deziray Skirka knocked in two runs with a double and single. Miley Poindexter reached base in all four at-bats with a single and three walks, while Abby Burritt added a single.
The game against Columbia Central was tied 1-1 after the first inning, but the Golden Eagles had big innings in the second and fourth to earn a berth in the tournament championship. Danika Skirka and Hannah Brown shared the pitching duties and pitched well, as the defense behind them played one of their best games of the year. Miley Poindexter singled and stole 3 bases. Abby Burritt, Shaylee Cope, and Cali Richards each had a hit.
The Orioles are now 14-15 on the season. they will host Big 8 rival Reading on Tuesday for Senior Night.
