COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Matthew Glaser has resigned as Branch County Chief Public Defender after serving in the position since 2019.
No immediate reason was given for his sudden resignation which was effective immediately on Thursday morning. Glaser’s resignation was added to the Branch County Board of Commissioners work session just a couple of hours before their meeting began.
County Administrator Frank Walsh asked Commissioners to approve the appointment of Chris Vreeland as the interim Chief Public Defender. He had been serving as Glaser’s assistant. Formal action by Commissioners is scheduled to take place during their regular meeting on Tuesday.
The Public Defenders office represents indigent defendants who can not afford legal counsel. Glaser, who is from Marshall, was one of four candidates to be interviewed six years ago.
Each county in Michigan was required to create an indigent defense plan due to a 2012 lawsuit. Part of the settlement called for the State of Michigan to implement a plan so that a defendant who was indigent would have proper legal representation.
