BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater didn’t allow a run all day Saturday as they won an MHSAA Division 2 Softball District championship at Harper Creek High School. The Cardinals shut out Marshall 13-0 in five innings in the Semifinal and blanked the host Beavers 8-0 in the District Final.
Against Marshall, Laynie VanAken allowed two hits and one walk while striking out 14. Mackenzie Searing was 3-for-3 hitting, including a double, and drove in five runs. Vandria Bucklin went 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in, Mya Porter was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and two RBIs, and Laynie VanAken 3-for-4 with a triple.
Laynie VanAken was also the winning pitcher against Harper Creek, allowing four hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts. She helped her own cause at the plate with a single, a double, and three runs batted in. Porter was 3-for-4, Searing doubled and drive in two runs, and Coley Burkhardt added a double.
Coldwater improved to 23-6 on the season and will face Eaton Rapids in a Division 2 Regional Semifinal contest next Saturday, June 7th, at Lansing Waverly. The Greyhounds won the Mason District title by shutting out the host school 4-0.

BRONSON, MI – Bronson also held their opponents scoreless Saturday as they won the Division 3 Softball District they hosted. The Vikings shut out Constantine 12-0 in six innings in the semifinals and blanked Centreville 10-0 in six innings in the title game.
Ashlynn Harris threw a no-hitter against Constantine with one walk and 11 strikeouts. Roni Bir went 4-for-4 with a grand slam, a 2-run double, and six runs batted in overall. Lydia Wells added a solo homer as she went 3-for-3. Harris and Kailynne Scare were 3-for-4.
Harris was also the winning pitcher against Centreville, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out 11. Scare went 2-for-4 with a 2-run double, Wells added a double, and Hermosa Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a triple.
Head Coach Beck Gray said afterwards, “It is great to get a District Title. Ashlynn pitched well (Saturday) and the defense played well behind her. We had some big hits from Lydia Wells and Roni Bir. We will work this week to prepare for a strong regional.”
The Vikings will take a 26-9 record into the Division 3 Leslie Regional next Saturday, June 7th, where they will face fifth-ranked Laingsburg in the Semifinals. The Wolfpack won the Lansing Catholic District by nipping the host school 5-4.

HOMER, MI – Quincy held off Jonesville 7-6 in the Semifinals of the Division 3 Homer District, but fell in the title game to Hanover-Horton 12-0 in five innings.
Against Jonesville, Deziray Skirka went 3-3 with 2 doubles and drove in two runs. With Quincy trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Makiya Feltner singled in two runs to give the Orioles the lead. Hannah Brown went 2-2, scored twice and stole two bases. Danika Skirka went the distance on the mound, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run.
Hanover-Horton ace Alexyn DuBois one-hit Quincy in the District Final. Deziray Skirka had the lone Oriole hit.
Quincy closed out its campaign with an 18-16 record and said goodbye to seniors Nakeisha Baker, Abby Burritt, and the Skirka twins, Danika and Deziray. Meanwhile, Hanover-Horton will face Jackson Lumen Christi next Saturday in the other Regional Semifinal contest at Leslie.
