CENTERVILLE, MI (WTVB)- Social media is full of accounts acting as media outlets, and they can often be quick to post inaccurate information, it’s for that reason The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to obtain their information from reputable and verified sources when seeking updates on law enforcement activity, public safety matters, or community alerts.
Sheriff Chad Spence says “In today’s digital age, misinformation can spread rapidly through social media and unofficial channels. While many platforms are useful for staying connected, they are not always accurate. Unverified information often causes unnecessary confusion, concern, or even panic”.
Spence added “We want our community to be informed, but we also want them to be accurately informed, if residents have questions or concerns about public safety or law enforcement activity, they should go directly to the source.”
He says you should use departmental websites and social media accounts as well as trusted media sources to receive accurate and verified information.
The Sheriff’s Office also encourages residents to follow local emergency management notifications for critical updates in real time.
