UPDATE: The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday afternoon identified the victim as 20-year-old Edgar Eduardo Hernandez-Alcantar of Sturgis. The name of the driver, who currently listed in stable condition, has been withheld pending possible charges.
STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – We are learning more today about a fatal accident that occurred in Burr Oak Township over the weekend. The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office happened on Sunday morning , near the area of Lafayette Road and Big Hill Road in St Joseph County.
The crash resulted in one fatality and one person hospitalized.
The St Joseph County Sheriff’s Office says at approximately 6:25 a.m., deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash involving two occupants.
Upon arrival, first responders located the vehicle off the roadway with significant damage. The driver, a 20-year-old male whose name is being withheld at this time, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. He is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
The passenger, also a 20-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigation suggests that alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
The incident remains under active investigation.
