COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County residents hoping to receive medical debt relief from the state of Michigan will have to wait a little longer.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Thursday more than $144 million worth of medical debt will be forgiven for nearly 210,000 Michiganders. The medical debt forgiveness is being announced in multiple rounds and to this point Branch County has yet to be included.
Among the medical debt forgiveness announced Thursday, 7,541 residents in Calhoun County had just over $3.9 million in medical debt forgiven, 5,514 residents in St Joseph County received a combined $2.8 million in forgiveness, while in Kalamazoo County 7,231 residents were forgiven of over $2.5 million in medical debt.
The State of Michigan partnered with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to help erase medical debt for residents statewide. This collaboration aims to alleviate financial burdens and support community members.
On average, $1 donated to Undue Medical Debt relieves $100 of medical debt.
The state plans for more rounds of medical debt forgiveness in the future, continuing efforts to assist Michiganders with financial relief. Undue says most recipients receive around $1,100 in forgiveness on average and most make less then $50,000 per year.
When Branch County is included, if you qualify you will receive a letter in the mail and no further action will be required.
