COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater Planning Commission approved a Special Land Use Permit Monday night which would allow a child care center to operate in a former church at 430 West Chicago Street.
The proposed child care center would be in a portion of the structure which used to be the site of the Reformation Lutheran Church. The church closed in November 2017.
Applicant Natasha Powell is proposing to convert about 1,300 square feet of the former chapel space into a licensed child care facility.
In addition to the interior improvements, a fenced outdoor play area is planned for the side yard to meet State of Michigan licensing requirements and to provide outdoor recreational space for children.
She is leasing the space for the facility from property owners Mark and Kathy Barone.
The request was subject to special land use approval in accordance with City Zoning Ordinances and is within the C-1 Central Business District, where child care centers are permitted with approval by the Planning Commission.
The proposed daycare center intends to operate during weekday hours, opposite the event center, which primarily functions on weekends and evenings.
