ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) -Pokagon State has temporarily closed its main swimming beach due to elevated levels of E. coli bacteria detected in recent water tests. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced the closure on Wednesday, prioritizing visitor safety after routine water quality testing revealed bacterial levels exceeding state safety standards.
The DNR stated that high E. coli levels, often linked to factors like stormwater runoff or animal waste, pose a potential health risk, prompting the immediate closure. Warning signs have been posted, and the public is advised to avoid swimming until further notice.
Park officials are conducting additional water tests to monitor E. coli levels, with results expected within 24-48 hours. The beach will remain closed until samples confirm safe conditions, typically below 235 E. coli colonies per 100 milliliters, per Indiana health guidelines. Other park activities, including boating, fishing, and hiking, remain unaffected, and the second beach at Trine State Recreation Area is still open for swimming.
Visitors are encouraged to check the Indiana DNR website or Pokagon State Park’s social media for updates on the beach’s status. The DNR urges anyone experiencing symptoms of E. coli exposure, such as stomach cramps or diarrhea, to contact a healthcare provider and report to local
Park officials are working diligently to restore safe swimming conditions.
