ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – Pokagon State Park’s Main Beach has reopened to the public following a temporary closure due to elevated E. coli levels.
The beach was closed on Wednesday, , after routine water testing revealed bacterial levels exceeding Indiana’s safety standards. The closure was prompted by an increase in nutrients in the water, likely due to heavy rainfall, which can elevate E. coli levels through runoff from farms, septic systems, or animal waste.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), a follow-up water test conducted on Thursday, confirmed that E. coli levels had returned to safe levels, allowing the beach to reopen on one of the hottest days of the year.
The DNR noted that such closures are uncommon at Pokagon, particularly at the Main Beach, where moving water typically helps maintain water quality. The swift reopening was attributed to the natural dilution in larger bodies of water like Lake James.
