COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan has seen more than double the number of tornados it sees in a typical year.
The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down in Deckerville, in Sanilac County Saturday, bringing the statewide total for the year to 30.
The EF1 tornado was on the ground for 1.6 miles, with maximum winds estimated at 95 mph, with damage to farm fields and barns primarily. No injuries or fatalities occurred, although a few vehicles were reportedly moved by the tornado.
This was 30th tornado to touch down in the state so far, which is more than double the usual average for the entire year.
Nationally, the number of tornadoes has also been high. Normally, the nation sees around 1,100 tornado reports by this point , but tornados since early March have totaled over 1396 so far in 2025.
The National Weather Service says tornados are possible in any month in Michigan,
But chances usually see dramatic decrease starting in November.
