STEUBEN COUNTY IN, (WTVB) – Steuben Indiana has had its request for a state disaster declaration rejected following destructive tornadoes on March 30th and April 2nd.
The storms, including an EF-0 or EF-1 tornado near Little Turkey Lake and a more powerful EF-1 tornado in Orland with winds up to 105 mph, caused significant damage, notably leveling the Stanley Mayer barn and downing numerous trees.
Despite efforts by the Steuben County Emergency Management Agency to compile damage estimates and seek assistance through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, the county did not meet the criteria for public assistance under the State Disaster Relief Fund, leaving government and emergency agencies without reimbursement for costs incurred during response and recovery efforts.
The rejection has prompted local officials to explore further options, with Emergency Management Agency Director Lee Greenamyer planning to gather additional data for a potential appeal. While the state denial is a setback, Indiana Governor Mike Braun has separately requested a federal disaster declaration through FEMA for the same storm period, which could unlock additional resources if approved.
In the meantime, residents affected by the storms can apply for limited assistance through the State Disaster Relief Fund, with initial aid capped at $2,000 for immediate needs, though further support may be available pending damage assessments. Steuben County continues seek ways to support the rebuilding and recovering from the spring storms’ impact.
