JACKSON,MI (WTVB) – With colder weather just around the corner Consumers Energy is offering assistance to Michigan customers with heating bills through its Consumers Affordable Resource for Energy (CARE) program as winter approaches.
The CARE program is a 24-month fixed monthly payment plan for income-qualified customers to manage energy bills and address past-due balances. Eligibility requires customers to be at or below 60% of the State Median Income; those needing help applying can call 2-1-1 to connect with nonprofit partners.
Brian Lewis, Consumers Energy’s Senior Executive Director of Customer Experience and Programs, says the initiative promotes “energy equity for all Michiganders”.
Expanded qualifications and new updates aim to broaden access to assistance. The prior requirement to apply for State Emergency Relief (SER) is mostly eliminated, and the state has increased SER fund payment caps for past-due bills. Starting in January, eligible customers can also apply for the Home Heating Credit and receive no-cost, in-home energy efficiency upgrades via the Helping Neighbors Program.
