LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Legislation aimed at finalizing the long-disputed border between Michigan and Indiana is heading to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s desk for her signature.
Sponsored by State Senator Jonathan Lindsey (R-Coldwater), Senate Bill 595 received final approval from the Michigan Legislature Tuesday following a concurrence vote in the Senate.
The bill seeks to resolve decades of uncertainty that have fueled property disputes, complicated traffic enforcement, and hindered environmental preservation efforts along the state line.
The new measure provides a practical solution to previous logistical failures, such as the inability to secure a single company to survey the entire boundary.
Under the approved legislation, individual counties are now authorized to survey their specific sections of the border, and the timeline for completing this work has been extended.
Lindsey noted that this “simple fix” prevents the state from restarting the arduous certification process from scratch, finally paving the way for a clear and legally certified jurisdiction between the two neighbors.
