UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City girls basketball team used a 17-4 second quarter to defeat the Maple Valley Lions 47-34 on Friday night in a Big 8 Conference game at McNett Fieldhouse.
The victory kept the Chargers unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big 8.
After the first quarter ended in a 9-9 tie, the Chargers took control of the game in the second quarter as they built a 26-13 halftime lead.
Maple Valley battled back in the third quarter as they outscored the Chargers 14-8 to cut the Union City lead to 34-27.
The Chargers lead was down to 36-32 in the fourth quarter before Union City went on a 11-2 spurt to end the game.
Ellie Williams led Union City with a game-high 22 points and 17 rebounds, while Nala Payne added 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 6 steals. Brynlee Joseph led the Lions with 14 points.
Union City also won the JV game in overtime 26-23.
Elsewhere in the Big 8, Quincy earned their first win of the season with a 42-36 victory at Reading. The Orioles improved to 1-3 overall, 1-1 in the Big 8. And in a battle of last year’s league co-champions, Concord got the better of Bronson, winning 57-29. The Vikings fell to 1-2 overall, 1-1 in the Big 8.
