Mary was born December 1, 1935 in Chester, Illinois, to Marcus McCarthy and Cornelia Schmidt. She later met the love of her life, Richard Bussler, in San Francisco, and the two were united in marriage on December 29, 1954, in Dowagiac, Michigan. Together they shared many years of love and marriage and would be celebrating their 71st anniversary. He preceded her in death November 15, 2018.
Mary was a proud graduate of Cal Poly Tech, where she earned her associate degree. She dedicated much of her professional life to working as a human resource manager at Douglas Auto and Keiper Auto in Battle Creek before retiring. Countless stories have been shared about Mary helping provide employment and purpose for those who were often overlooked by others. Mary’s purpose in work was to add value to others lives.
Dick and Mary often wintered in Florida and retreated to their cabin in Baldwin and developed deep community wherever they went. Mary had deep faith and was active in church life. She delighted in flea market sales and the community of friends they built. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking, and volunteering. Her kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others touched many lives.
Mary’s life was marked by both resilience and joy. She mourned the loss of two sons early in life and personally overcame three battles with cancer as well as many health struggles, yet her joy remained. Her strength came through faith, and her joy came from her family. She was never as joyful as when surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her children Richard (Patty) Bussler of Coldwater, Daniel (Myrtle) Bussler of Lapieer, MI, Debra (Ronald) Grossheim of Coldwater, Donald (Teri) Bussler of Battle Creek; her 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her sons David Bussler and Samuel Bussler; and her brothers Don and Sam McCarthy.
A special thank you to all staff at Maple Lawn for the great care over the past few years.
