LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt has formally requested an audit of the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP).
The request specifically targets the Child Development and Care (CDC) program, which manages over $540 million in taxpayer funds intended for low-income childcare and after-school subsidies.
In a formal letter to State Auditor General Doug Ringler, Nesbitt, a candidate for governor cited recent high-profile fraud cases in Minnesota as a catalyst for the probe, expressing concern that “foreign scammers” or criminal enterprises could be exploiting Michigan’s systems.
He pointed to past pandemic-era unemployment fraud under the Whitmer administration as evidence for the necessity of proactive oversight to ensure fiscal accountability.
