KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – One day after Coldwater posted a 24-point home girls basketball victory against Pennfield, the Cardinals traveled to Kalamazoo Central, withstood the defensive pressure of the Maroon Giants, and notched a 56-47 victory to improve to 5-4.
Coldwater opened up strong, leading 13-5 after one. Kalamazoo Central flipped the script in the second quarter, using a 13-5 advantage to send the game into halftime tied 18-18. The Cardinals held a slight 18-17 edge in the third. They outscored the Maroon Giants 20-12 in the final quarter as they took advantage of four Giant players fouling out of the game.
The two teams combined for 47 fouls – 19 for Coldwater and 28 for K-Central – and shot a lot of free throws, with the Cardinals going 18-of-31 from the line and the Giants finishing 11-of-22.
Mya Porter led all scorers with 14 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe, and added 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Her cousin, Rylie VanAken, drained three triples in the second half and finished with 13 points, 3 boards, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Vandria Bucklin had 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Coldwater will visit Harper Creek Friday night.
