ADRIAN, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School gymnastics team traveled to Adrian for the first meet of the season Wednesday night.
The Cardinals dropped the contest by a score of 108.6-128.1, but did end the night with three individual regional qualifiers.
According to co-coach Randi Dudek, many of the girls are returning from last year but are still very new to the sport and are making amazing improvements every day at practice. There are also a handful of girls who have never done the sport before and have been making amazing progress in such a short amount of time.
She says the main goal of the night was to get everyone on the equipment in front of judges to get the first meet nerves out of the way, and that’s what happened. The Cardinals had 9 girls compete on vault, 6 girls on bars, 9 on beam, and 10 on floor, which is an impressive number of girls competing in each event for the first meet. The girls did a fantastic job, and we were very pleased with their performances.
Coldwater started off the meet with bars, most doing previous routines for the first meet. The Cardinals that made their debuts on bars for the evening included Isabella Cornish, Maryfer Galvan, Alyssa Everett, Macy Poradzisz (placing 6th), Annika Johnson (placing 7th), and Sofia Gruner.
The sophomores Jalianna Zepeda, Cornish, Lily Scheidler, and Kennedy Austin began the second event, with many of them competing in their first-ever vaults. Austin scored the highest for the white team with a 7.6 and placed 7th. Kinley Cummings began the second event for the red team with her first-ever vault, which was then followed by one of our seniors, Poradzisz. For our first regional qualifier for the night was one of our freshmen, Everett, competing in her first-ever high school meet and scoring a 7.9 and placing 6th. Johnson was up next, placing 8th on vault, and ending the event was our senior, Gruner, also getting her first regional qualifier with an 8.075 and placing 5th.
Floor started with one of our freshmen, Mariana Duque Bermudez, who is new to gymnastics and has really impressed us. Schidler scored the highest for our white team with a 6.2, followed by Austin and Zepeda. Ending this event for our white team was Payton Taylor scoring a 6.0. The girls on the red team that made their debut on the floor were Galvan, Johnson (placing 7th), Cummings, Poradzisz, and Everett (placing 5th).
Making their debut for the white team on beam were Austin, Cornish, and Zepeda. Following the white team, making their debut for the red team were Galvan, Johnson, Poradzisz (placing 6th), and Everett. Ending the night was Gruner getting her second regional qualifier of the night with a 7.525 and placing 4th.
Coldwater will travel to Lowell Saturday, January 10 for an invitational for their next competition.
