COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved a resolution on Monday night that supports the North Chain of Lakes Association’s efforts to manage the local Canada goose population.
The resolution allows the association to apply for a five-year permit from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to conduct nest and egg destruction on Cemetery, South, Messenger, and North Lakes through 2031.
Association President Tom Duff says the resolution has gotten support from Girard and Coldwater Townships.
The strategy will focus on non-lethal methods such as freezing eggs or destroying nests to encourage migration and prevent new goslings.
The Michigan D.N.R. has reported the number of giant Canada geese counted each spring increased from about 9,000 in 1970 to over 300,000 in 2000.
The Canada goose populations in Michigan is currently estimated to be between 175,000 and 225,000. The geese are most common in the southern third of the state.
