COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A new decade-long study by Big Auto Accident Attorneys has revealed that Michigan drivers face their highest risks during peak summer travel and weekend transitions.
Analyzing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data from 2014 to 2023, researchers found that August is the state’s deadliest month, accounting for 10.54% of all traffic fatalities. The danger peaks on Saturdays, which see 17.52% of all road deaths, while the most hazardous time of day is the evening rush hour window between 6:00 p.m. and 6:59 p.m.
Despite these specific high-risk windows, the study highlights that driver behavior is a more significant threat than environmental factors. Data shows that 65.55% of Michigan’s fatal crashes occur in clear weather, and nearly half happen during broad daylight.
While Michigan recorded 10,368 fatalities over the ten-year period, its fatality rate of 1,032.55 deaths per million residents remains 6.69% lower than the national average. This performance ranks Michigan as the 31st safest state in the U.S. according to the latest NHTSA safety metrics
