BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – After months of discussion, the Bronson City Council approved an updated Golf Cart/UTV ordinance on Monday night.
In response to feedback from Council members at last month’s meeting, the ordinance has been revised to include two key changes.
It will permit crossing at any intersection on U.S. 12 rather than limiting crossings to just intersections with traffic lights.
In addition, the hours of operation will be from 5:00 a.m. through 11:00 p.m. which eliminates the previous language limiting operation to one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset.
Council member Larry McConn cast the only no vote as he voiced strong opposition to the proposed changes.
In other business, the City Council approved a proposal from Washler, Incorporated out of Garrett, Indiana to handle curbside trash and recycling services for the next five years. A formal contract will be presented to the City Council at a later time.
Washler was one of three companies to submits bids. One of the other bids came from Republic. The current contract between the City of Bronson and Republic expires March 1.
With the change to Washler, trash & recycling days in Bronson would change to Wednesday. In addition, recycling would be every other Wednesday and bulk pickup would take place every other Wednesday opposite of recycling week. All bulk items would be $15 per item.
City Manager Brandon Mersman says Washler carts would be delivered during the last week of February. The first pickup date would be March 3.
He added in his report to the City Council, “Continuing to include recycling services for all residents provides the best value to our residents. If we switch to Washler Inc. with recycling included for everyone, it is only a 3.52% increase from our current rates. While a switch will be a challenging transition, staying with Republic would be a 15.86% increase for our customers. Switching to a recycling program where only those that want recycling pay for it would mean a 19.7% increase for those customers and would make billing and administering the program much more difficult. We are very pleased with the bid results as we were expecting an increase of 20 to 30% starting March 1.”
