COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Consumers Credit Union is issuing a security warning to all members regarding a recent increase in fraudulent activity involving phone “spoofing.”
Reports indicate that fraudsters are currently placing calls to members while posing as credit union employees. These scammers are utilizing sophisticated technology to mask their true caller ID, making it appear as though the call is originating directly from an official Consumers Credit Union phone number.
During these calls, fraudsters typically attempt to solicit sensitive personal data or specific account information.
To ensure your financial security, Consumers Credit Union advises members to follow these critical safety protocols:
– Verify the Caller: Be wary of any unsolicited call asking for personal details, even if the caller ID displays “Consumers Credit Union.”
– Do Not Share Sensitive Data: Consumers will never call you to ask for your full Social Security number, account passwords, or PINs.
– Hang Up and Call Back: If you receive a suspicious call, do not provide any information. Hang up immediately and dial Consumers directly at 800.991.2221. By initiating the call yourself, you ensure you are speaking with a legitimate representative.
